Monuments Fund Aruba signs agreement with Rancho Foundation
On Friday 3rd of July, Monuments Fund Aruba (SMFA) celebrated the termination of the Lime Kiln restoration project in Rancho and a user agreement was signed with the Rancho Foundation.
From today on the Rancho Foundation can make free use of the lime kiln for their walking tours. For years, the Rancho Foundation has been committed to raising awareness and education about the Rancho neighborhood and its monuments. The Lime Kiln is a 128-year-old industrial monument that was last restored around the 1970s. In recent years, unfortunately the lime kiln has been in a very bad condition.
Since it is an object that cannot be rented out, it was difficult to obtain financing for this project. Thanks to partners such as Aruba Bank, VNO, Unoca and Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, it was possible to restore the lime kiln completely in 2019.
At the fourth Conference of Caribbean Heritage Organizations, in early 2019, SMFA was introduced to Parvenir Heritage Restoration and Maintenance Co. Ltd. from Trinidad and Tobago. As a contractor, they have extensive experience in working with limestone and lime plaster. And they have set themselves the goal of sharing their knowledge in the Caribbean.
The knowledge about lime production and processing has almost disappeared from Aruba in recent years. This makes restorations more difficult and SMFA also experiences many problems with the maintenance of limestone buildings and objects. Therefore, SMFA has decided to combine the restoration project with a traditional stone masonry course.
The restoration started at the end of September. In total, 17 people participated in the course and received a certificate from Enseñansa pa Empleo. After the course, the restoration continued with the help of a group of Parke Arikok rangers who also attended the course. And together with Parvenir who led both the course and the restoration they completed the project.
The restoration project was smaller than projects we’ve done in the past, but it certainly had its challenges. This is partly due to the very poor condition of the oven.
Due to the situation with addicts around the lime kiln, we have decided to close the entrances to the lime kiln with gates to prevent incidents as in the past.
SMFA is very pleased with the result and to having contributed to a positive development in the area of Rancho and we hope this project can inspire more positive developments and projects in the future.

Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba tekent overeenkomst met Stichting Rancho
Op vrijdag 3 juli vierde Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba (SMFA) de beëindiging van het restauratieproject Kalkoven in Rancho en werd er een gebruikersovereenkomst met Stichting Rancho getekend.
Vanaf vandaag kan Stichting Rancho gebruik maken van de kalkoven voor hun wandelingen. Al jaren zet Stichting Rancho zich in voor de bewustwording en educatie over de buurt van Rancho en hierbij de monumenten uit het buurt. De Kalkoven is een 128 jaar oud industriële monument die rond de jaren zeventig laatst werd gerestaureerd. De laatste jaren verkeerde de kalkoven in een zeer slechte staat.
Aangezien het gaat om een object dat niet verhuurd kan worden was het moeilijk om financiering te kunnen krijgen voor dit project. Dankzij partners als Aruba Bank, VNO, Unoca en Prins Bernhard cultuurfonds was het mogelijk om de kalkoven in 2019 te restaureren.
Op de vierde Conferentie van Caribische monumentenorganisaties, begin 2019, heeft SMFA kennisgemaakt met Parvenir Heritage Restoration and Maintenance Co. Ltd. uit Trinidad en Tobago. Zij hebben als aannemer veel ervaring in het werken met kalksteen en kalkpleister. En daarbij hebben zij zich ten doel gesteld om hun kennis te delen in het Caribisch gebied.
De kennis over kalkproductie en verwerking is de afgelopen jaren bijna verdwenen van Aruba. Hierdoor zijn restauraties moeilijker en ondervindt Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba ook veel problemen met het onderhoud van kalkstenen gebouwen en objecten. Dit is de reden waarom SMFA besloten heeft om het restauratieproject te combineren met een cursus Kalk.
Eind september ging de restauratie van start. In totaal hebben 17 personen deelgenomen aan de cursus en een certificaat ontvangen van Enseñansa pa Empleo. Na de cursus ging de restauratie door met behulp van een groep rangers uit Parke Arikok die ook de cursus hadden gevolgd.
Samen met Parvenir die zowel de cursus als de restauratie leidde werd het project afgerond.
Het project was kleiner dan projecten die we in het verleden hebben uitgevoerd maar had zeker zijn uitdagingen. Onder anderen door de slechte staat waarin de oven verkeerde.
Aangezien de situatie met verslaafden rond de kalkoven hebben we besloten om de ingangen van Kalkoven met hekken af te sluiten om incidenten als in het verleden te voorkomen.
SMFA is heel erg tevreden met het eindresultaat en het kunnen hebben bijdragen aan positieve ontwikkelingen in de buurt van Rancho en we hopen dat dit project een inspiratie kan zijn voor meer positieve ontwikkelingen en projecten in de toekomst.
