In 2016 the one year Academic Foundation Year of the University of Aruba started with the goal to support students that are making the transition from secondary to higher education in their academic development, orientation and personal development. The dissatisfying success ratios of Aruban students in the Dutch higher education system made the necessity of a different approach for Aruban students in preparatory education very clear. This is why the University of Aruba, in collaboration with the Aruban Directorate of Education and Ministry of Education and with the support of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Sciences, started the Academic Foundation Year Program. During the initial three editions of the program, the number of registered participants has grown to more than 70 in the 3rd year. In September of this year, the fourth edition of this successful program will start.
Similar programs have been set up in the US and in Europe that offer the opportunity for solid personal and academic growth, rather than taking a gap year. Systematic quality and satisfaction evaluations among students and surveys among alumni allow the university to monitor the quality and effect of the program. The teaching staff consists of a mix of Aruban and international (guest) lecturers that ensure the introduction of the students to teaching and research at institutes for higher education, including universities. Program participants are free to set up part of their curriculum, which allows them to try out the fields of study that they are interested in under the guidance of the teaching team.
Recently the journal Environmental Education Research published a research article on the impact of the didactic concept of the Academic Foundation Year in the module “Introduction to Earth and Environment”. This publication was written by guestlecturers Maarten Eppinga, Tobia de Scisciolo, and program coordinator Eric Mijts. The focus of this research was to establish whether the didactic concept of the program does not only support knowledge acquisition, but also influences motivation and the students’ sense of responsibility. The research shows that the approach of the program leads to a significant positive shift in engagement and social responsibility of the students.
The surveys and evaluations demonstrate the tangible impact of participation in the program on the personal and academic growth of the majority of the students. Academic Foundation Year bij de Universiteit van Aruba
Het eenjarige Academic Foundation Year van de Universiteit van Aruba startte in 2016 met als doel studenten die de overgang maken van middelbaar naar hoger onderwijs te ondersteunen in academische vorming, oriëntatie en persoonlijke ontwikkeling. De tegenvallende succesratio’s van Arubaanse studenten in het Nederlandse hoger onderwijs maakten de noodzaak van een andere aanpak van het voorbereidend onderwijs duidelijk. Dit was aanleiding voor de Universiteit van Aruba om het programma te starten in overleg met Directie Onderwijs en het Ministerie van Onderwijs en met steun van het Nederlandse Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap. In de eerste drie jaren groeide het aantal inschrijvingen tot meer dan 70 in 2018. In september van dit jaar start de vierde editie van dit succesvolle programma.
In de VS en in Europa bestaan vergelijkbare programma’s zoals het Academic Foundation Year die de student de mogelijkheid bieden om persoonlijke en academische groei door te maken in plaats van een gap year te nemen. De universiteit monitort de kwaliteit van het programma aan de hand van regelmatige onderwijsevaluaties en enquêtes onder alumni. Het onderwijsteam bestaat uit een mix van Arubaanse en internationale (gast)docenten die de studenten laten kennismaken met onderwijs en onderzoek zoals dat ook bij universiteiten en hogescholen gegeven wordt. Deelnemers aan het programma worden begeleid in het vormgeven van een deel van hun eigen onderwijspakket zodat ze kennis kunnen maken met de studieonderwerpen van hun keuze.
Recentelijk verscheen in Environmental Education Research het onderzoek naar de module Introduction to Earth and Environment en de impact van het onderwijsmodel van het Academic Foundation Year. Deze publicatie werd geschreven door gastdocenten Maarten Eppinga, Tobia de Scisciolo en programma coördinator Eric Mijts. De focus van dit onderzoek was te achterhalen of het onderwijsmodel van het programma niet enkel aan kennisopbouw werkt, maar ook aan motivatie en verantwoordelijkheidsbesef. Het blijkt dat de onderwijsaanpak een aantoonbare stijging in het engagement en maatschappelijk verantwoordelijkheidsbesef van de studenten teweegbrengt.
Uit de enquêtes en evaluaties blijkt het duidelijke effect van het programma op de persoonlijke en academische groei van een groot deel van de deelnemende studenten. Het team van Academic Foundation Year staat klaar om ook de komende jaren studenten te ondersteunen die behoefte hebben aan een dergelijk groeiproces.
