Proper hygiene is an important part of preventing the spread of contagious diseases. An area used by a large number of people requires frequent cleaning and sanitizing.
Cleaning refers to the removal of dirt and impurities from surfaces. Cleaning alone does not remove all germs.
Sanitizing refers to using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. Sanitizing doesn’t necessarily clean surfaces, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.
So once a surface has been cleaned, it is important to sanitize any commonly touched surfaces for proper hygiene.
Steps:
- Clean thoroughly all areas of the building:
- Vacuum all floors & carpets [ ] C. Wipe areas from top to bottom [ ] B. Dust areas from top to bottom [ ] D. Mop all floors [ ]
- Get a standard disinfectant, such as hydrogen peroxide (any with a concentration between 3% and 7.9%) or grain or rubbing alcohol (with at least 70% alcohol but less than 90%) or a bleach-and-water solution of 1/12 cup (4 teaspoons) of bleach per 1 liter of cool water). Note: Make sure the bleach is not expired and never mix bleach
with any other cleaning solution or liquid except water. [ ]
- Clean first and then sanitize frequently touched common surfaces and high-traffic areas in the building. Do this at least 3 times a day or more depending on frequency of use:
- Children’s areas [ ] [ ] [ ] I. Chair arms [ ] [ ] [ ] B. Doorknobs [ ] [ ] [ ] J. Faucets [ ] [ ] [ ] C. Stair rails [ ] [ ] [ ] K. Tablets [ ] [ ] [ ] D. Countertops [ ] [ ] [ ] L. - If there is an increase of body traffic repeat steps 1 through 5 above more than 3 times a day.
