Memoria Ancestral Receives Warm Reception at Curaçao International Film Festival

Curaçao, 11 April 2025Memoria Ancestral, the powerful Aruban documentary exploring the legacy of slavery and colonialism, had its official festival premiere last night at the Curaçao International Film Festival, receiving an overwhelmingly positive response from the audience during its screening and post-film Q&A session.

The film was presented as part of the Caribbean Focus 4 program, which centered on the theme of identity. This thematic showcase featured four films from the region, each weaving together stories with intersecting or shared elements, highlighting the deep cultural and historical connections across the Caribbean.Cas di Cultura’s Director Vicky Arens and Head of Programming Lotte van den Heuvel are currently attending the festival in Curaçao and were present for the premiere. 

Commissioned by Cas di Cultura and created by Natusha Croes, Layzima Emerencia, and Darwin Winklaar, Memoria Ancestral is a multidisciplinary production made in collaboration with Aruban scholars, institutions, and experience experts. It revisits the Afro-Indigenous enslavement and colonial influences deeply rooted in Aruba’s past.

The documentary’s inclusion in this prestigious festival, running from April 9–13, 2025, is a moment of pride not only for the creators and the Aruban community but also for the broader Caribbean region as it continues to share its complex and rich history with the world.
