RAPP’s first Caribbean Journalism Seminar draws a good turnout
ORANJESTAD, Aruba, September 22, 2024: Last Friday evening, the first edition of the Caribbean Journalism Seminar 2024 took place at Impact Hub Aruba, marking the official launch of Aruba’s first professional journalism association, Red Arubiano di Prensa Profesional (RAPP). The seminar featured an international guest who specializes in investigative journalism.
The event attracted a full room of journalists and interested guests, eager to learn more about the topics presented at the inaugural event by RAPP, which included special guest speakers:
• Luis Anibal Villegas: A former journalist in Aruba, now working as a freelance journalist and law student at UVA in the Netherlands. Villegas presented the “Lob-generator,” a tool designed to make public information requests easier for residents of the Dutch Caribbean islands.
• Marlon Kock: A UX expert, who elaborated on “Artificial Intelligence and how journalists can use it as a time machine to aid in production.”
• Carla Minet (Keynote Speaker): An investigative journalist who has worked on important investigations such as the Panama, Pandora, and Paradise Papers. Minet, the executive director of the Centro Investigativo de Periodismo in Puerto Rico, presented on “Challenges and Opportunities for Journalists in the Caribbean.” Minet explained the current scenario in various Caribbean countries and the challenges journalists face. She emphasized the need for investigative journalists in the region to collaborate on cross-border stories to better inform the public about issues that affect them and hold responsible authorities accountable. “It is important to work together in the region, especially given the lack of support journalists face, particularly when covering difficult topics where resources are scarce,” she explained.

Red Arubiano di Prensa Profesional (RAPP) is a newly established non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the free practice of journalism and high ethical standards. RAPP’s mission is to empower all journalists in Aruba through advocacy, education, and a commitment to ethical reporting, fostering a community where media professionals can collaborate, innovate, and uphold the highest standards of journalism. It is the first organization focused on professional journalists as individuals and has officially established itself as an association following the ethical guidelines of the Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ).
Since January, the founders of RAPP, Melissa Stamper, Andreina Morillo, and Yorleny Oduber, have been working on creating a collective to professionalize the press in Aruba, which is greatly needed. They have met frequently to align their vision, and this led to the creation of RAPP, with the aim of addressing the current challenges in Aruba’s press sector.

Goede opkomst bij eerste Caribbean Journalism Seminar van RAPP
ORANJESTAD, Aruba, 22 september 2024: Afgelopen vrijdag vond de eerste editie van het Caribbean Journalism Seminar 2024 plaats in Impact Hub Aruba, waar Aruba’s eerste vereniging voor professionele journalisten, Red Arubiano di Prensa Profesional (RAPP) gelanceerd werd. Het seminar verwelkomde een internationale gastspreker gespecialiseerd in onderzoeksjournalistiek.
Tijdens het seminar was de zaal gevuld met journalisten en geïnteresseerde gasten, die presentaties kregen te zien van verschillende spreker:
• Luis Anibal Villegas: Voormalig journalist op Aruba, momenteel freelance journalist en rechtenstudent aan de UVA in Nederland. Villegas presenteerde de “Lob-generator,” een hulpmiddel waarmee inwoners van de Caribische eilanden van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden gemakkelijker openbare informatie kunnen opvragen.
• Marlon Kock: Een UX-expert die uitlegde hoe AI als een ‘tijdmachine’ kan worden gebruikt om journalisten te helpen bij het produceren van nieuws.
• Carla Minet (Keynote Speaker): Een onderzoeksjournalist die heeft deelgenomen aan belangrijke onderzoeken zoals de Panama-, Pandora- en Paradise Papers. Minet, uitvoerend directeur van het Centro Investigativo de Periodismo in Puerto Rico, gaf een lezing over de “Uitdagingen en Kansen voor Journalisten in het Caribisch Gebied.” Ze gaf een beeld van de huidige situatie in verschillende Caribische landen en de uitdagingen waarmee journalisten te maken hebben. “Het is noodzakelijk dat onderzoeksjournalisten in de regio samenwerken aan verhalen om het publiek beter te informeren over problemen die hen treffen en om verantwoordelijke autoriteiten ter verantwoording te roepen. Samenwerken in de regio is belangrijk, vooral gezien het gebrek aan ondersteuning voor journalisten, vooral bij het behandelen van moeilijke onderwerpen,” legde ze uit.

Het is de eerste organisatie die zich richt op professionele journalisten als individuen en heeft zich officieel gevestigd als een vereniging die de ethische richtlijnen volgt van de Nederlandse Vereniging van Journalisten (NVJ).
