Aruba Airport acknowledges the significant impact caused by the airport closure today. Due to a technical issue, 39 flights were affected, disrupting the travel plans of approximately 4,000 passengers.
Overnight, a critical technical problem occurred within our air conditioning system due to a rupture in the primary chiller pipe. This malfunction resulted in rapidly rising temperatures within the terminal, creating an environment that could potentially compromise the health and safety of everyone present.
After careful consideration, we made the difficult decision to temporarily halt all airport operations and close the airport. This step was essential to ensure the safety of our passengers, employees, and the broader airport community. With no immediate solution available to restore the air conditioning within a safe timeframe, it was imperative to take proactive measures to prevent any health risks associated with the rising temperatures and slippery floor due to condensation forming as a result of the warm temperatures.
In the interest of passenger safety, we also evaluated the availability of local hotel accommodations. Many rooms were initially on hold for incoming passengers, but the closure allowed us to release these reservations, providing stranded travelers with a safe and comfortable place to stay as we address the situation.
The air conditioning system is fully operational again, and all passengers have been accommodated. We are working closely with all airlines to manage flight rebookings and ensure that affected passengers receive the necessary support. The airport will reopen tomorrow at 7 AM.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and disruption this closure has caused. The safety of our passengers and staff remains our foremost concern, and we will continue to prioritize this in all our decisions. We appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate this challenge.
