(San Juan, Puerto Rico- July, 1 2020) The secretary of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce, Manuel Laboy Rivera, announced that our certified medical tourism hospitals are ready to continue offering our neighbors in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands specialized health services.

“Puerto Rico, after these three months has demonstrated the capability to deal with Covid-19 by being one of the first U.S. territories to have a lockdown and marking one of the strictest measures in a U.S. jurisdiction by screening passengers at the Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport. On the other hand, our Joint Commission accredited hospitals have implemented the highest protocols for health and safety required by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) including the Comprehensive Hospital Preparedness Checklist for Coronavirus Disease in addition to the OSHA and Puerto Rico Health Department protocols”, said Laboy Rivera.

Puerto Rico has four hospitals around the island with various specialists who treat patients who arrive for medical treatment. Dorado Beach Health will soon open in the municipality of Dorado, which will collaborate with Johns Hopkins Medicine experts to improve patient care quality through advanced clinical programs and education and training opportunities. It is estimated that, under Medical Tourism, Puerto Rico generates approximately 12,200 direct, indirect and induced jobs.

The Secretary of DEDC, mentioned that Government of Puerto Rico is committed to protect the health and safety of our visitors and residents in the Island.

“We would like to continue offering specialized medical treatments to our neighbors in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and recommend you contact our medical tourism network hospitals to find out what are their protocols regarding Covid-19 before arriving to Puerto Rico. Our Government is committed to protect the health and safety of our visitors and residents in the Island”, explained Laboy Rivera.
