Op 8 juli ontvingen 46 studenten aan de Universiteit van Aruba de certificaten voor de succesvolle afronding van het Academic Foundation Year. Hiermee rondden zij hun eerste jaar in het hoger onderwijs af, een jaar waarin ze werkten aan academische vaardigheden, taalvaardigheid, studiekeuze en persoonlijke ontwikkeling. Dit jaar startten 65 studenten met het programma waarvan 54 studenten het jaar afmaakten.
Tijdens de ceremonie onder leiding van programma-administrator Kevin Richardson getuigden studenten Stephany Lewis en Amanda Croes over de invloed van het programma op hun persoonlijke ontwikkeling. Ze benadrukten de groei en ontwikkeling die ze als studenten van het programma doormaakten, niet enkel op inhoudelijk vlak in kennis en vaardigheden, maar juist ook in hun persoonlijke ontwikkeling in zelfvertrouwen en zekerheid over de keuzes die ze maken.
Veel deelnemers aan het programma zijn aan het begin nog op zoek naar hun definitieve studiekeuze. Ze krijgen daartoe de gelegenheid om deel te nemen aan vakken van de verschillende faculteiten van de universiteit en worden ook gestimuleerd om stages en on line onderwijs te volgen. Van de studenten die het Academic Foundation Year met succes afrondden blijft de helft voor verdere studies aan de UA in Aruba, de andere helft gaat naar Europa, en een enkeling gaat verder in de Verenigde Staten en een paar studenten die reeds een beroepskwalificatie hadden kiezen ervoor om te gaan werken.
De Universiteit van Aruba is trots op de resultaten van de studenten en kijkt uit naar de start van de vierde cohorte van het Academic Foundation Year in augustus 2019.
46 UA students obtain their Academic Foundation Year certification
On July 8, 46 University of Aruba students received their certificates for successful completion of the Academic Foundation Year program. They completed their first year in higher education, a year in which they worked on academic skills, language skills, study choice and personal development. This year 65 students started and 54 students completed the program. In addition to the 46 graduates, an additional 8 students received their grade transcripts to certify the courses that they followed within the program.
During the commencement ceremony, led by program administrator Kevin Richardson, students Stephany Lewis and Amanda Croes testified on the impact of the program on their personal development. They emphasized the growth that they experienced as participants in the program, not only a growth in knowledge and skills, but also a growth in confidence and determination in the choices that they are making.
Many program participants are initially still in an orientation phase, looking for a definitive study choice. Therefore, they are allowed and encouraged to follow modules offered by the faculty programs of the university as well as to take up apprenticeship positions and follow online courses. Half the of the students that successfully completed the Academic Foundation Year will continue their education at the UA in Aruba; the other half will continue their studies in the Netherlands, with the exception of those that either go to study in the US or have decided to start their working careers because they already have a starting qualification.
The University of Aruba is proud of the students’ success and is looking forward to the start of the fourth cohort of the Academic Foundation Year in August 2019.
